Ascension Parish teams earn playoff spots

All three of Ascension Parish’s Class 5A baseball teams are bound for the playoffs.

District 6-5A teams Dutchtown, St. Amant and East Ascension each earned a spot this year, which represents the first time the Louisiana High School Athletic Association implemented a power-rating system similar to the one used for football.

All but one team in the district qualified for the postseason. League leaders Destrehan took the No. 2 spot, while Dutchtown earned the No. 4 position. St. Amant claimed No. 20, and East Ascension filled No. 24. District opponent Hahnville took No. 17.

Other notable rankings include Catholic High, which claimed the No. 1 spot, and Lafayette, which took No. 3.

Dutchtown finished second in district this season. The Griffins will host No. 29 Ouachita Tuesday at 6 p.m. to get postseason play started.

St. Amant and East Ascension will have to travel in the first round. The Gators will head to Shreveport for a Wednesday date with Byrd, while the Spartans will also go to north Louisiana for a 6:30 p.m. start Wednesday at West Monroe.

In Class 1A, Ascension Catholic will travel to play Archbishop Hannan Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Now for local teams, the stakes are high. A win moves a squad one step closer to a state title, while a loss means the season ends. Two wins earns a spot in the state tournament, but it takes five victories to take the championship.
