ST. AMANT – Central knocked out top-seeded St. Amant in the regional round of the Class 5A playoffs Thursday.

Central, the 16th-seeded team, claimed a 2-0 win, sparked by a two-run sixth inning.

With the bases loaded, freshman outfielder Katie Flowers hit a single to drive in the runs.

The loss ended St. Amant’s streak of state tournament appearances, which date back to 2001. The Gators, who won five straight state tiles from 2002-2006, had advanced to the state tournament every season from 2001-09.

Central senior pitcher Shelbee Rodgers, a University of Louisiana signee, had a three-hit performance with 10 strikeouts.

Central (15-15) advances to the state tournament for the second time in three years.

In the decisive sixth inning, Central picked up back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases. Flowers followed with a hit to right center to drive in what proved to be the game-winning runs.

St. Amant senior Aime Parent (26-6) collected five strikeouts, and allowed six hits.

Parent, Kelly Luquette, Kandace Boudreaux, Melanie Parker, Gabrielle Templet and Morgan Hutchinson are St. Amant’s seniors. Most of them have started since their freshman years.
