East Ascension put away a scrappy Assumption team in Tuesday’s 5-0 bidistrict match up in Gonzales.

The Spartans, seeded No. 2 in the Class 5A state pairings, struggled with the No. 31 Mustangs in the early innings. But East Ascension eventually scraped together the runs to take the shut-out victory.

The Spartans relied on strong pitching efforts from senior Rachel LeCoq and junior Chelsea LeBlanc to shut down the Mustangs.

The Spartans will host St. Joseph’s Academy Friday at 4:30 p.m. in Gonzales.

The Redstickers are the No. 15 seed. They edged No. 18 seed Byrd, 1-0, this week to advance.
