Spartans’ bats come alive in jamboree sweep

East Ascension’s Austin Todd is mobbed by teammates after hitting a grand slam in the second inning of the Spartans’ 8-5 victory over Thibodaux in the St. Amant Jamboree Saturday afternoon at Gator Park.

ST. AMANT - East Ascension’s Austin Todd hit a grand slam in an 8-5 victory over Thibodaux in the Spartans first game of the jamboree and then shutout St. Amant 4-0 in the finale Saturday afternoon.

Chris Sanchez grounded past third to get  things started for the Spartans against Thibodaux. Cortland Giardina then lined a double off the left wall before Jared Kleinpeter's liner past short plated the game’s first run.

Todd drew a walk off starter Nick?Ber to load the bases before Alec Singletary’s fielder’s choice crossed another. Kleinpeter scored when Singletary looked like he was caught in  a run down to make it 3-0. 

Brandon Thibodaux dropped a bloop past a diving Giardina at second to open the bottom half off of starter Logan Fife before Ber’s double off the wall in the left gap loaded the bases after Shae Hebert drew a walk.

Trent Granier’s groundout plated a run before another crossed when Fife struckout Matt Labat but the ball got away. Fife struckout Grant Trosclair to end the inning after walking Trey Naquin to load the bases.

Cody Daffron lined to center to open the second inning and Ber walked Giardina and Kleinpeter to load the bases. Todd, who took a full count pitch over the new high wall fence in the left gap to put the Spartans ahead 7-2, was the first batter Justin Zerinque faced.

Emerson Foster struckout both Thibodeauxs to send the Tigers down in order in the bottom half.

Chase Rivett grounded through the left infield for a double to lead off the third off of Naquin and Daffron dropped a hit over second to put the Spartans ahead 8-2. Hayden Fenley drew a walk but was left stranded.

Hebert dropped a hit in front of left off Daffron to open the bottom half before Ber singled to right. Labat drew a walk to load the bases and Naquin’s bobbled pop up plated a run. Two more scored on Trosclair’s groundout and Blane Oncale’s liner to the shortstop hole to reflect the final tally.

East Ascension went to work quick off of St. Amant starter Justin Manton, who walked Sanchez and Todd to load the bases after hitting Kleinpeter. John DeArmond’s liner to center plated two runs before Singletary’s groundout crossed another to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead.

Singletary retired the side in order in the bottom half striking out Dillon Morin and fielding Kenny Wilkins hard liner back to the mound.

The Spartans added another run in the second inning when Sanchez reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on Giardina’s liner to shallow right center. Logan Boudreaux walked Kleinpeter and hit Todd to load the bases before DeArmond lined out deep into the left gap.

The next seven batters were retired in order. Todd struckout Dylan Delaune to end the second inning before Morin sent the Spartans down in order in the third striking out Jack Cockrum. Jacob Templet dropped a hit in front of a diving Rivett in center off Alex Gremillion in the bottom half but Task Plauche grounded into a double play to end the game.
