Dutchtown’s Hill claims runner-up at state tournament

KENNER – Dutchtown’ Zach Hill advanced to the state championship final in the Division I 285-pound weight class before losing a decision to Airline’s DeAngelo Brooks to place runner-up Saturday night at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association state wrestling tournament at the Pontchartrain Center.

No. 3 seed Hill lost to Brooks, the top seed and defending champion, 11-4 in the finals match. Brooks had previously defeated Hill in the championship semifinals of the Louisiana Classic in January.

Catholic won the team title with 301.5 points, followed by Jesuit with 294.5 and Archbishop Rummel with 212.5. Dutchtown placed 11th with 88.5 points, while East Ascension was 16th with 60 and St. Amant tied for 25th with 32.5.

Dutchtown’s Austin Gravelle also placed fifth at 135 pounds, while teammate Matthew Hamilton was sixth at 125 pounds and St. Amant’s Jacob Lindekugel placed sixth at 145 pounds.

Hill pinned Grace King’s Mavcol Rizo in 34 seconds to open the meet before dropping Acadiana’s Jevin Hebert in 1:15. He then won a 3-1 decision over Sulphur’s Travis Stegall and a 3-2 decision over Jesuit’s Joey Tumminello to advance to the finals.

Gravelle, who also placed fifth last year, won a forfeit match over Fontainebleau’s Zach Stow for fifth place. The No. 4 seed opened the meet by pinning Central’s Beau Brumley after a bye. Gravelle then pinned Catholic’s Colin Durett in 3:09 before falling to top seed Timmy Harris of Jesuit in 3:13 but rebounded to pin Comeaux’s Tyrek Malveaux in 4:33.

Unseeded Hamilton, who also placed sixth last year, opened the meet by pinning Brother Martin’s Logan Labry in 1:23 before losing 19-2 to top seed David Mahoney of Jesuit. Hamilton rebounded to win four straight matches pinning Hahnville’s Austin?Montrey and Carencro’s Hunter Roger in 47 and 41 seconds before winning a 9-7 decision over Mandeville’s Kevin Clark and a 19-7 decision over John Ehret’s Joseph DAquin. He lost a 9-1 decision to Catholic’s Garrett Carville in the fifth place final.

Lindekugel was also unseeded and opened the meet by pinning Central’s Mike Breaux and winning a 9-0 decision over Grace King’s Imad Almuzien before losing 10-2 to No. 2 seed Trey Misuraca of Catholic. Lindekugel rebounded to pin Airline’s Jacoby Christaw in 4:16 and win a 9-2 decision over Mandeville’s Jack Ingalls but lost a 10-0 decision to Comeaux’s Jeff Wilson and an 8-2 decision to John Ehret’s Joshua Redmond in the fifth place finals.

Dutchtown’s Aaron Carbo fell to No. 4 seed Matt Calcote of Rummel at 103 pounds to open the meet before reeling off three straight wins to nearly place.

East Ascension’s Austen Waguespack, seeded third, won a 7-2 decision over Lafayette’s Jaylon Castille before being upset by Rummel’s Dakota Boesch 15-13. Waguespack then won a 6-5 decision over St. Paul’s Sam Girault before losing to Destrehan’s Hunter Menendez 7-6. 

East Ascension’s Thomas Turner, seeded sixth at 140 pounds, opened the met by pinning John Ehret’s Troy Kent and Bryd’s Galen Lambert both in 3:46 before losing to Catholic’s Wade Samaha 13-5. Turner then pinned Hahnville’s Nick Corzo in 5:33 before losing to Comeaux’s Ty Moreau.

St. Amant’s Brett Howell opened the meet by winning a 6-0 decision over East Ascension’s Scott Bosworth before losing 12-0 to Zachary’s Shawn Kimble. Howell then won a 3-2 decision over Brother Martin’s Ross Cuesta and 5-2 decision over Hahnville’s Tanner Eusea before falling to St. Paul’s Regan Reed in 57 seconds.

St. Amant’s Brennan Howell pinned Dutchtown’s Clay Ducote in 1:22 to open the meet before falling to Airline’s Dalton Elliot in 2:34 at 215 pounds. Howell then pinned Grace King’s Marcio Mladenoff in 3:26 and Central’s Tyler Ourso in 1:48 before losing to Sulphur’s Casey Brown 8-3.

Dutchtown’s Dallas Chenevert lost to Brother Martin’s Austin?Iviicevich 10-4 to open the meet at 119 pounds before pinning Northshore’s Kodi Wagner in 4:48 and Higgins’ Jorge Sanchez in 2:30. Chenevert then fell to Jesuit’s Rex Hanemann in 2:25.

East Ascension’s James Rawls pinned St. Amant’s Alex LaValley in 3:05 to open the meet at 125 pounds before falling to Mandeville’s Kevin Clark in 3:46. Rawls then pinned Grace King’s Hashim Alrahaleh in 1:57 and defeated Comeaux’s Olin Lemaire III 14-7 before losing to Chalmette’s Blake Ory 11-4.
