Waguespack, Hill, Gravelle top local seeds at state
KENNER – East Ascension senior Austen Waguespack, Dutchtown junior Zach Hill and Dutchtown junior Austin Gravelle headline the list of seeded Ascension Parish wrestlers at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Tournament scheduled to begin today at the Ponchartrain Center.
Waguespack, coming off his second consecutive Greater Baton Rouge City championship, is the No. 3 seed at 112 pounds behind Airline’s Matt Rabinowitz and Jesuit’s Patrick Spruell. Waguespack did not place at state in 2008.
Hill enters the meet as the third seed in the 285-pound weight class behind Airline’s DeAngelo Brooks and Brother Martin’s Sam Engro after advancing the the city championship finals.
Gravelle, who placed fifth in 2008, is the fourth seed at 135 pounds behind Jesuit’s Timmy Harris, Rummel’s Mark Pinero and Brother Martin’s Jason Puente. Gravelle is also coming off a city championship.
Ascension Parish has a seeded wrestler in just four of the 14 weight classes in Division I.
Wrestling begins today at 9 a.m. with the first and second rounds of the championship brackets and the first round of the consolations. The second round of consolations is scheduled for 11 a.m. Session II, which includes the third round of championships and the third and fourth round of consolations, will be from 5-9 p.m.
Session III opens Saturday at 9 a.m. with the fifth round of consolations. Semifinal action begins at 10:30 a.m. The sixth round of consolations will be held from noon-2 p.m., followed by the consolation bracket championships at 2 p.m. The state championship matches will be held in Session IV, scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
Admission is $10 per person per session. An all-session pass will be sold for $35. Gates open one hour prior to first match of each session.
East Ascension’s Thomas Turner is also seeded sixth at 140 pounds after taking sixth at state in 2008.
Also competing at 103 pounds is East Ascension’s Dylan Salsman, Dutchtown’s Aaron Carbo and St. Amant’s Ryan Burleigh.
Competing at 112 pounds will also be St.?Amant’s Christopher Boyter and Dutchtown’s Brayden Sonnier .
Dutchtown’s Dallas Chenevert, East Ascension’s Manuel Luna and St. Amant’s Logan Comeaux will compete at 119 pounds.
Set to compete at 125 pounds is St. Amant’s Alex LaValley, Dutchtown’s Matt Hamilton and East Ascension’s James Rawls.
At 130 pounds is East Ascension’s Keith Fort and Dutchtown’s Ryan Davis.
Also competing at 135 pounds is East Ascension’s Zach Roy, while Dutchtown will send Taylor Gesick at 140 pounds.
Competing at 145 pounds will be East Ascension’s Norman Bougere, St. Amant’s Jacob Lindekugel and Dutchtown’s Mason Schexnaydre.
St. Amant’s Hakeem Brooks, Dutchtown’s Ahmad Henry and East Ascension’s Michael Sparrow will compete at 152 pounds.
Set to compete at 160 pounds are St. Amant’s Brett Howell, East Ascension’s Scott Bosworth and Dutchtown’s James Kent.
At 171 pounds, East Ascension’s Adam Alfred, St. Amant’s Jeremy?Huff and Dutchtown’s Alex Medine will compete.
Competing at 189 pounds is East Ascension’s Jon Karrer and Dutchtown’s Trevor Settoon.
St.?Amant’s Brennan Howell, Dutchtown’s Clay Ducote and East Ascension’s Donald Russell are set to compete at 215 pounds.
Also competing at 285 pounds are East Ascension’s Graham Karwath and St. Amant’s Jamal Laymoun.
