Destrehan’s Akeem Sumlin gathers a rebound ahead of East?Ascension’s DeAundre Smith in the first half of the Wildcats’ 59-50 District 6-5A victory Wednesday night.

Destrehan jumped out to a 10-point lead going into the second quarter and held off East Ascension for a 59-50 District 6-5A victory Wednesday night at EAHS’ gym.

East Ascension cut the deficit to five to open the second half but would get no closer.

East Ascension (16-15, 1-8) was led by Tyler Wright with 16 points, while Keith Fleming added 14, Devonte Fisher contributed eight, Curtis Watts had five, DeAundre Smith provided three and Jamal?Steward chipped in two.

B.?J. Singleton led Destrehan (23-9, 5-4) with a game-high 17 points, while Ryan Derbes added 15, Kevin Smith and Akeem Sumlin each provided nine, Sean Palmer had six and Koy Fagan chipped in two.

Derbes’ putback opened the contest as the Wildcats never trailed. Singleton’s turnaround followed before Smith’s dish to Watts for a 3-pointer on the left wing put East Ascension on the board.

Derbes then connected back to back 3-pointers from opposite corners from Palmer and Fagan to put Destrehan ahead 10-3.

Wright’s 18-footer from the top of the key from Fleming preceded Singleton’s from the right wing and his putback before Palmer’s lane drive gave the Wildcats a 16-5 lead. Palmer’s pull up jumper with two seconds remaining in the quarter made it 18-8 after Fleming fed Wright for a 3-pointer in the right corner.

Fleming provided five points in the second quarter and Wright and Fisher each hit 3-pointers as the Spartans cut the deficit to 28-21 at halftime. Derbes and Sumlin each hit 3-pointers in the frame.

Singleton’s inside turnaround opened the second half before Sumlin fed Palmer off a steal to put Destrehan ahead 32-21. Fisher’s dish to Wright for a 3-pointer on the left wing and Fleming’s assist to Watts off a steal cut the deficit to five before Sumlin’s pull up jumper with six seconds remaining gave the Wildcats a 35-28 lead.

Fleming’s spin inside and putback sandwiched Smith’s drive to open the fourth quarter before Smith fed Singleton inside and Sumlin’s dish to Derbes for a 3-pointer in the right corner pushed the lead back to 42-32.

Wright’s jumper in transition from Smith preceded Fisher’s reverse before Smith fed Singleton inside for an and one. Sumlin’s lane drive put the Wildcats ahead by 11 before Wright connected for a 3-pointer on the left wing from Smith.

But Smith converted a drive off the Spartans’ press for an and one before feeding Singleton inside to put the Wildcats ahead 53-40. Fleming’s jumper before Smith and Fisher exchanged dishes to each other for 3-pointers cut it to 55-48.

Fagan tipped Sumlin’s missed putback attempt to reflect the final tally after he and Smith both missed two free throws apiece with 16 seconds remaining after Fleming’s reverse.
