Hahnville pulls away from Spartans down stretch to move into first place
Hahnville closed out the first half on a 6-0 run and never really looked back on way to a 50-39 District 6-5A victory Friday night at EAHS’ gym.
The Tigers used a 12-4 run midway through the second half to take control.
Keith Fleming led East Ascension (16-12, 1-5) with a game-high 16 points, while Javaughn Williams added eight, DeAundre Smith provided seven, Jamal Steward had five and Curtis Watts chipped in three.
Hahnville (18-7, 5-1) was led by Warren LeBeouf and Aaron Francis each with 12 points, while William Becnel added 10, Derek Howard provided eight and Jerquinick Sandolph chipped in three.
Watts’ 3-pointer put East Ascension ahead 19-16 in the second quarter before LeBeouf banked a drive and Francis’ putback gave the Tigers a 22-19 halftime lead.
Becnel’s dunk from LeBeouf put Hahnville ahead 28-21 after Becnel’s drive and LeBeouf’s putback opened the half.
Williams fed Fleming cutting inside for an and one to cut it to 31-25 after Becnel’s 3-pointer from the left wing. After LeBeouf fed Jauries Thomas for a dunk, Bobby Madere found Fleming in transition but Sandolph’s tip at the buzzer gave Hahnville a 37-27 lead after his dish to Francis off an inbounds pass.
Francis’ tip opened the final frame before Smith pulled up from 18 feet on the left wing. LeBeouf’s penetrating dish to Francis inside for a dunk preceded Howard’s dish to the big man inside to give Hahnville their biggest lead 43-29.
Tyler Wright fed Smith for a 3-pointer near the top of the key before Fleming’s free throws cut the deficit to nine. After a pair for free throws from LeBeouf and Becnel, Smith passed to Williams for a 3-pointer on the left wing.
Sandolph’s free throw reflected the final tally after Steward pulled up from the free throw line.
