BREAK THROUGH: Waguespack defends title; Gravelle claims city championship

Dutchtown’s Zach Hill wrestles St. Michael’s Stephen Scardina in the 285-pound championship semifinals at the Greater Baton Rouge City Championships Saturday afternoon.

DENHAM?SPRINGS –  East Ascension’s Austen Waguespack defended his title, while Dutchtown’s Austin Gravelle broke through at the Greater Baton Rouge City Championships Saturday afternoon at Denham Spring’s Grady Hornsby Gym.

Dutchtown placed sixth in overall standings with 75.50 points, while East Ascension was eighth with 64.9 and St. Amant took ninth with 58.50.

Catholic won their eighth straight team title with 245.50 points, followed by St. Michael and Brusly.

Waguespack was the only champion to not enter the meet as the No. 1 seed. He overcame a 6-2 deficit to edge Austin Schermer of Brusly 9-8 on a late reversal to win at 112 pounds.

Gravelle won a major decision over Catholic’s Colin Durett to claim the championship at 135 pounds.

Dutchtown’s Zach Hill also advanced to the championship finals at 285 pounds but fell to Redemptorist’s Justin Arnett in 4:39.

Advancing to the consolation finals were Dutchtown’s Aaron Carbo at 103 pounds, St. Amant’s Chris Boyter at 119 pounds, St. Amant’s Alex LaValley at 125 pounds, East Ascension’s Thomas Turner at 140 pounds, St. Amant’s Brett Howell at 160 pounds, East Ascension’s Scott Bosworth at 160 pounds and St. Amant’s Brennan Howell at 215 pounds.

Carbo won a 17-2 technical fall decision over Istrouma’s Johnny Williams, while Boyter and LaValley were pinned by Live Oak’s Dylan Curra and St. Michael’s Tres Gravois in 2:44 and 2:22.

Turner lost a 6-2 decision to Zachary’s Trevor Limmer before Brett Howell won a major decision over Bosworth and Brennan Howell defeated St. Michael’s Michael Borne 6-5.

Waguespack opened the meet by winning an 8-0 major decision over Zachary’s Jared Daigle, while Gravelle pinned Central’s Brad Hayes before winning a 10-2 major decision over St. Michael’s Michael Morris.

Hill opened the meet by pinning Central’s Chris Thompson in 59 second before winning a decision over St. Michael’s Stephen Scardina.

Carbo advanced to the championship semifinals before losing a 10-3 decision to Catholic’s Zack?Louis. Boyter fell to Catholic’s Blake Ashford in 1:56 of the championship semifinals. Dutchtown’s Dallas Chenevert also advanced to the semifinals at 119 pounds before falling to St. Michael’s Ben Willeford in 2:46.

Dutchtown’s Matt Hamilton lost a 2-1 decision in the 125-pound semifinals to Live Oak’s Cody Cormier while Turner lost an 8-6 decision to St. Michael’s Brock Portier.

St. Amant’s James Lindenkugal lost a 6-2 decision to Tara’s Trey Huckaby in the 145-pound championship semifinals, while Brett Howell fell to Catholic’s Patrick Bourgoyne in 44 seconds and Bosworth was pinned by St. Michael’s Miles Greenblatt in 5:16.

Brennan Howell fell to Brusly’s Dylan Hood in 1:45 of the championship semifinals.

Also competing for East Ascension were Manual Luna, George Bollinger, James Rawls, Zach Roy, Norman Bougere, Adam Alfred, Jon Karrer, Donald Russell and Graham Karwath.

Also competing for St. Amant were Ryan Burleigh, Kade Sears, Hakeem Brooks, Andrew Allemond and Jamal Laymoun.

Also competing for Dutchtown were Taylor Gesick, Mason Schexnaydre, Ahmeed Henry, James Kent, Victor Mattaur, Trevor Settoon and Clay Ducote.
