Crews have begun to clear thousands of trees from upper Bayou Lafourche on the west side of Ascension Parish.

The project is an effort to unclog and speed the flow of water.

The bayou supplies water to Assumption, Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes.

The clearing is the first phase of the $20 million project.

Nearly 3,000 trees will be removed.

A 6.2-mile stretch of the bayou, from Donaldsonville to Belle Rose, will be dredged.
