Spartans pour it on East St. John, 9-1

East Ascension scored two late first-half goals to take a 3-1 lead and poured it on East St. John with six second-half goals on way to a 9-1 District 6-I victory Friday night at Spartan Stadium.

Brandon Ruiz provided a hat trick for the Spartans while Jared Hill added two goals. Edwin Morales, Jose Patino, Carlos Hermosillo and Jose Hermosillo each had one goal apiece for East Ascension (10-3-3, 5-1).

Joseph Perriloux provided the lone goal for East St.?John (5-12-3, 1-5), while Ricky Williams had six saves.

The Spartans outshot East St.?John 27-6.

Ruiz cracked the scoreboard with 26 minutes remaining in the first half off a rebound on Hill’s side shot. East Ascension took the first five shots with Williams saving three.

The Wildcats quickly answered when Perriloux converted off a rebound from a free kick less than two minutes later to knot it up.

Ruiz put the Spartans ahead for good on a breakaway from Justin Cornes through a collision with a defender and Williams with 4:50 left to play in the first half.

Hill converted a header from Cornes less than two minutes later to give the Spartans a 3-1 halftime lead.

It took East Ascension less than five minutes to score in the second half when Morales fed Ruiz. The Wildcats nearly answered when Thaddeus Knight converted off Tyler Hazet’s rebound five minutes later but offsides was ruled.

East St. John took the next two shots before Morales converted off a deflection to put the Spartans ahead 5-1 with 23 minutes remaining.

Hill scored his second goal when he drew Williams out of the box with 17:40 left to play.

East Ascension did not leave any doubt scoring three more times in a four minute span.

Patino converted off Williams’ deflection of Cornes before Carlos Hermosillo nailed a turnaround shot and then fed Jose Hermosillo for the final tally with 4:30 left to play.
