St. Amant’s Melanie Parker signs a softball scholarship to LSU-Eunice Friday afternoon in the Lady Gators’ locker room. Parker hit .384 with 36 RBIs and 28 runs to go with a team-high four home run while stealing fives bases last season as a junior. “I like Eunice because it is small like St. Amant,” Parker said. “The coaching staff is laid back but the program itself reminds me of St. Amant a lot. It is right there and not too much of a big change and I am hoping I get to learn some different hitting techniques.” Throughout her career, Parker has hit 25 home runs. “She is an incredible athlete first of all,” St. Amant head coach Scott Nielson said. “She is just so natural whether it is hitting, throwing or running. Things come easy to her. She has a nice arm in the outfield and gets a great jump on the ball. She just has a ton of power and if you throw her a mistake, she is going to make you pay for it. They are getting a good all-around offensive and defensive player and she is excellent in the classroom, too.” Pictured from left, back row: St. Amant head coach Scott Nielson, LSU-Eunice head coach Andy Lee, St. Amant principal Steve Westbrook, St. Amant assistant athletic director Celeste Small and assistant coach Troy Templet. The Lady Gators look to reclaim the state title this season after a streak of five consecutive championships was broken. “I really think we have a team that will do well this year,” Parker said. “It is basically the same team as last year but I think everybody wants to win state more this year. I really think we are going to take it all if we keep our minds set on it. We just have to take it each game at a time.”
