Boil water order lifted for Donaldsonville, others still in place

Staff reports

A boil water order for customers of People Water Company in Donaldsonville was lifted Thursday morning, according to an Ascension Parish spokesperson.

The order was put in place after the transformer that powers the company’s pumping station failed and had to be replaced Tuesday, spokesperson Scott Rabalais said. The order was lifted for Donaldsonville after water quality tests were completed Thursday.

Test results are still being awaited for Assumption Parish water customers in the west bank communities of Modeste, Smoke Bend and McCall, as well as St. James Parish water customers in Darrow on the east bank. Boil water orders are still in effect for those areas until further notice.

In addition, residents in those areas are asked to conserve water to allow the system to recharge.

The Environmental Protection Agency advises bringing water to a rolling boil for one minute then letting it cool before being consumed or stored.

Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez declared state of emergency Jan. 12 for the West Bank of Ascension Parish because of water supply problems in the Donaldsonville area.
