State of emergency declared for west bank of Ascension Parish

Staff reports

Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez declared a state of emergency today for the west bank of the parish due to water supply problems.

All Donaldsonville area public schools closed today at 11:30 a.m. due to no water service in the area, according to school officials.

Customers of Peoples Water Company in Donaldsonville were expected to be without water until late tonight after a transformer failure at its pumping station.

Donaldsonville has also been added to the boil water order, which has already been in place for the west bank communities of Modeste, McCall and Smoke Bend. The Darrow area on the east side is also under a boil water order.

Residents in all areas of the west bank are asked to conserve water to allow the system to recharge.

The boil water order is in effect for the west bank and Darrow until further notice.

"We are asking our residents to be patient and to try to minimize the use of water," Donaldsonville Mayor Leroy Sullivan said.

The Environmental Protection Agency advises bringing water to a rolling boil for one minute then letting it cool before being consumed or stored.

Water for Modeste, McCall and Smoke Bend is supplied by Assumption Parish, which has been experiencing problems with its system due to the recent cold weather. Water in the Darrow area comes from St. James Parish.
