Gonzales man wins $30,000 in lottery
Gonzales resident Jessie Hayes has won a few dollars here and there through the lottery, but nothing like the prize he collected from the Jan. 2 drawing. And now, he has his hopes set on raking in millions.
Hayes claimed a $30,000 Powerball prize, which he used to buy a silver Infiniti G35.
“I”ve been wanting a new car for a long time,” he said after accepting the prize money at lottery headquarters.
In the past, he said he would win small prizes, like $10 and one time $200.
After hitting the $30,000 prize, Hayes said he hopes to graduate to the million-dollar range.
If he ever does hit a multi-million-dollar jackpot, he said he would buy a house and make sure his children and family are taken care of financially.
Hayes said he realized he had a winning ticket while he helped a friend check her Powerball tickets.
“I just kept looking for ‘42’ on my ticket,” he said. “It was the only number I was missing.”
He bought the winning ticket at Jiffy Mart No. 4 on North Range Road in Denham Springs.
His ticket matched four of the five white-ball numbers drawn and the red Powerball number to win $10,000. His prize was multiplied by three because he added the Power Play option to his ticket, which increased his total winnings to $30,000.
For an additional $1 per play, Powerball players can purchase the Power Play option to multiply any nonjackpot prize up to five times, depending upon the Power Play number randomly selected during the drawing.
Ticket purchasers must be at least 21 years of age. The Lottery encourages anyone who may have a gambling problem or friends and family of anyone with a gambling problem to call toll free 1-877-770-7867 for help. For security purposes, the Lottery strongly encourages players to sign the back of their tickets immediately after purchasing.
