Central trips up Spartans on Briscoe’s closing seconds three

Central’s Will Briscoe nailed a 3-pointer from the left wing in the closing seconds to deliver the Wildcats a 55-54 victory over host East Ascension in the nightcap of a District 5-5A/6-5A Challenge Friday night.

East Ascension’s Keith Fleming attempted a desperation heave that clanged off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

Tyler Wright led all scorers with 19 points for the Spartans (10-4), including five 3-pointers, while Fleming added 16 and Curtis Watts and Donald LeBlanc each had eight.

Wes Briscoe led Central (8-2) with 14 points, while Brock Poydras added 11, Jae Cutno provided nine and Josh Veals had seven.

East Ascension rebounded Saturday night to oust Catholic (7-4) 47-45. Watts had 17 points for the Spartans and Fleming provided 16.

Central scored the first five points of the game and took a 14-13 lead at the end of the first quarter but East Ascension extended a 25-23 halftime lead to 43-40 going into the final frame.

East Ascension held the biggest lead 38-27 in the third quarter when Watts nailed the Spartans’ third consecutive 3-pointer.

DeAndre Smith’s free throws and LeBlanc’s lay up off a steal put the Spartans ahead 50-44 after LeBlanc fed Wright for a pull up jumper in transition but Wes Briscoe’s 3-pointer from the right wing off an inbounds pass cut it to 53-52 with 1:30 left to play after Poydras fed Cutno inside.

Fleming converted just one of his two free throws in the closing seconds to leave the door open for Central.

East Ascension hosted Tara Monday night and will not be back on the court till they host the Spartan Classic Dec. 26-30.
