Catholic overcomes St. Amant on Caire’s last second 3-pointer

Catholic’s Keith Caire sank a 3-pointer on the run from near the top of the key as the buzzer sounded to deliver a 50-47 victory over St. Amant  in the first game of a District 5-5A/6-5A Challenge Friday night at EAHS’ gym.

St. Amant’s Jacob Gauthier had tied the game 47-47 with a pair of free throws with 7.8 seconds remaining.

Steve Fulkerson led all scorers with 22 points for St. Amant (1-13), while Gauthier added 12 and Justin Manton provided nine.

Caire and Tanner Breaux each had 13 points for Catholic (7-4), while Anthony Brock added 11 and Preston Pittman had seven.

St. Amant also fell Saturday night to Central 61-42. Fulkerson had 14 points for the Gators, while Brock Poydras provided 15 for the Wildcats (8-2).

Catholic took a 14-7 advantage going into the second quarter before St.?Amant trimmed the lead to 24-23 at halftime. The Wildcats took a 35-31 lead going into the final frame.

Manton’s spin inside cut it to 39-36 before Fulkerson fed him for a 3-pointer on the left wing with just under four minutes remaining.

After Caire pulled up at the free throw line, Fulkerson drove baseline and fed Gauthier inside to put the Gators ahead 43-42.

Breaux’s up and under put Catholic back ahead before Brock’s free throws but Mileke Beasley drove lane in transition with 33.7 seconds remaining to cut it to 46-45 and after Breaux left the door open by just making one free throw, Gauthier was fouled on a putback attempt.

St. Amant hosts Scotlandville tonight  before not returning to the court till East Ascension’s  Spartan Classic Dec. 26-30.
