Amite River, Diversion Canal closed to recreational traffic

Staff reports

Amite River and the Diversion Canal are closed to recreational boat traffic, Ascension and Livingston parish officials announced Tuesday afternoon.

Both waterways will remain closed until further notice, except in case of emergency or to examine flood-threatened property, Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez said in a release.

The Amite River at Manchac Point is expected to crest at 8.5 feet at 6 p.m. today, one-half foot below flood stage.

“Out of an abundance of caution we feel it is necessary to close the river and diversion at this time,” Martinez said. “When the water returns to a safe level we will reopen these waterways.”

Portions of Ascension have received more than of 10 total inches of rain since Dec. 7.

Most of Ascenion Parish drains into the Amite River basin.
