Lady Spartans dominate Zachary
East Ascension scored within the first two minutes and never looked back on way to a 4-0 victory over Zachary Friday night at Spartan Stadium.
The Lady Spartans out shot Zachary 27-1 overall and 17-1 in the second half.
“It is soccer and it is hard to score goals but I think the big difference was our substitutions,” East Ascension head coach Christopher Goodall said. “When we subbed, the quality didn’t drop off and if you are a little fresher it makes a difference. Overall, this was probably our best game of the season.
“When the girls get time on the ball, it gives them a chance to survey the field and decide where the point of attack is going to go. Communication worked really well for us tonight. It is a pretty good start to the season and we are happy with it.”
East Ascension (2-0) got two goals from Kristen Simoneaux off free kicks and Jennifer Flores and Rebecca Austin provided the other two scores. Ashley Humphrey had six saves for the Lady Spartans while Lizzy Coleman provided 14 for Zachary (0-2) and Hope Yantis added five.
“They have a pretty good bit of speed up top and they were really hurting us with the direct attack,”?Zachary head coach Paul Owen said. “They have a great team and we have a lot of young players. We have some things to work on but we are getting there.”
Simoneaux’s direct kick cracked the scoreboard less than two minutes into the contest.
Flores' rebound following Marissa Sanchez’s attempted header off Janel?Boylan’s free kick put the Lady Spartans ahead 2-0 with 18:50 left to play in the first half.
Kendell Knight provided Zachary’s lone shot of the night wide right shortly after.
Haley Gautreau was wide left off a rebound from Boylan’s corner kick to open the second half. Flores and Austin both had attempts before Jordan Guidry’s turnaround was wide left.
Austin beat Hilary Baird to the goal on a breakaway that put East Ascension ahead 3-0 with 27:25 left to play.
Jennifer Cornes’ breakaway was then wide right before Yantis saved two kicks from Simoneaux.
Simoneaux’s free kick reflected the final tally with 2:50 left to play after Gautreau’s rebound attempt was knocked down by Yantis.
Kayla Bourgeois’ breakaway was saved by the goalkeeper before Boylan’s attempt was just wide right and Simoneaux’s corner kick that produced a lot of activity in the box produced no goal all within the final minutes.
