DONALDSONVILLE –  St. Amant was outscored 12-6 in the second quarter by White Castle, who held on for 61-55 victory on the second day of the Tiger Classic XIII?at Donaldsonville High’s gym Thursday evening.

The loss eliminated the Gators (0-3) from the tournament despite a game-high 30 points from?Steve Fulkerson.

“We have almost no margin of error,” St. Amant head coach Gary Duhe said. “We have to eliminate turnovers and do a better job on the defensive end. We didn’t play real good defense today and that hurt us.

“We are limited on what we can do offensively. Steve is the only guy we have coming back and he is our bread and butter but better teams are going to take that away. We have to have other guys step up and score. It is a learning situation and the first week of the season so we just have to keep playing. That is all we can do.”

White Castle countered with 26 points from Quadry Allen and Dontreal Thomas and Terrence Fair each added 10.

“We were patient tonight and ran our half court offense,” White Castle head coach Ronald Johnson said. “We made some outside shots tonight but still had some turnovers we shouldn’t have but that comes with the territory. The kids are young. I am very proud of what they did tonight for a Class A school going against a 5A school. You look at the talent and quality of kids we have and they were hungry tonight.”

St. Amant built a 16-9 lead in the first quarter before the Bulldogs scored the final four points of the stanza on Daniel Allen’s backdoor pass to Damarius Wesley and lay up off a steal.

Jacob Gauthier’s inbounds pass to Fulkerson for a baseline jumper made it 19-13 but consecutive floaters from Quadry Allen and his lay up off a steal put White Castle ahead for good 21-20 with 3:05 left to play in the half.

Fair’s lane drive made it 25-22 at halftime after Dalton Alexander pulled up in the lane for St. Amant.

Justin?Manton fed Fulkerson inside to open the second half. After Thomas’ bucket, Fulkerson dished to Gauthier inside. Quadry Allen’s 3-pointer from the left corner preceded another inside bucket from?Gauthier before Fair’s floater and Daniel Allen’s 3-pointer from the left wing built at 35-28 lead for White Castle.

Quadry Allen’s free throw gave the Bulldogs a 39-33 lead going into the final stanza after Jacky Joseph’s putback.

Fulkerson’s inside basket and one opened the final frame before Thomas’ free throw put White Castle ahead 50-40 after Fair’s dish to Thomas in transition and Wesley’s double pump following Malik Beasley’s pass to Fulkerson inside.

Beasley’s 3-pointer from the right wing preceded Wesley’s backdoor dish to Fair and Fulkerson’s inside bucket.

Fulkerson’s spin inside cut it to 57-48 before he fouled out. Beasley’s drive in transition reflected the final tally after Gauthier’s spin inside and Manton’s 3-pointer from near the top of the key.

St. Amant opened the tournament with a 51-34 loss to Thibodaux Wednesday. Fulkerson led the Gators with 14 points.

White Castle fell to Assumption 65-49 in the consolation game Saturday. Quadry Allen had 18 for the Bulldogs.
