East Ascension’s Bobby Madere converts a lay up in transition over Christopher Bailey to open the second half of the Spartans’ 66-43 season opening victory Monday night.

East Ascension limited St. Michael to just six points in the third quarter to blow open an 11-point halftime lead on way to a 66-43 season opening victory Monday night at EAHS’ gym.

The Spartans’ reserves continued the onslaught taking their biggest, 29 points, with 1:50 left to play.

“I thought they had a decent start to the second half and then we caught our second wind and played real well,” East Ascension head coach Kenny Almond said. “We got to work on holding the ball when they were doubling and got through without getting anybody hurt so it was a good game.

“We played a good system. They are a little young and have to come around but we are going to play a lot quicker athletes than they have down the road.”

Tyler Wright led the Spartan (1-0) attack with 15 points. Keith Fleming and Curtis Watts each added 10, while Bobby Madere and Donald LeBlanc provided eight apiece. Devonte Fisher added seven, while John Paul Williams had five and Kadarius Williams chipped in four.

“We are very young,” St. Michael head coach Drew Hart said. “These kids have never seen this speed of basketball. I thought we hung with them for a while but didn’t do a good job of managing the game in the third quarter. That is when they blew it open and when that happened, they could have ran around in circles and we weren’t going to catch them.”

LeBlanc fed Wright inside to cap a 10-0 run in the first quarter that saw Wright pull up in the lane, Watts and Madere dish to Fleming inside and LeBlanc drive lane in transition. St. Michael cut it o 16-11 when William Arcement fed Brad LaCoste for a 3-pointer in the right corner at the buzzer.

East Ascension went on a 7-0 run in the second quarter kickstarted by Wright’s pump fake before Watt’s drive and one. Jake Flaggert drove lane to cut it to 32-21 at halftime.

LeBlanc fed Madere in transition to open the second half Wright's 3-pointer from the left corner and Madere and Fisher’s lay ups off a steals put the Spartans ahead 41-24.

Fisher’s putback and one and dish to Watts for a 3-pointer from the left wing preceded Wright’s jumper to make it 53-27 going into the final stanza.

Damien Guilbeau’s putback opened the fourth quarter before Arcement’s drive and one after Wright’s baseline jumper.

John Paul Williams’ baseline drive and one preceded Willie Williams’ dish to Kadarius Williams inside and Wright’s pass to Fisher underneath the basket. LeBlanc’s free throws gave East Ascension a 66-37 lead with 1:50 left to play after Kadarius Williams’ layup off a steal.

St. Michael closed out the contest on a 6-0 run capped by Tyler Parker’s lay up off a steal.

Arcement led the Warriors (0-1) with 15 points, while Guilbeau added nine.

East Ascension took a 57-48 win over Assumption  in the Tiger Classic Wednesday. Wright had 13 points and Madere added 12.
