BATON?ROUGE – Dutchtown’s Shelby Jones ran to a second-place finish in the Baton Rouge Rouge Metro Championship cross country meet Tuesday afternoon at Highland Road Park.

Jones crossed the finish line in 18:55 behind only Christian Life’s Katherine Devitt, who won the three-mile race in 18:27. Jones grabbed the lead before the two-mile mark with a charge down a hill before Devitt made her move in the final mile.

“It feels good,” Jones said. “I am excited but the focus is on state now. I just wanted to stay with the lead pack and I was with them the entire time.”

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association State Cross Country Meet for Classes 5A-3A will be held Monday, Nov. 16 at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches.

Jones’ finish helped Dutchtown to a fourth-place finish in overall standings. St. Joseph’s won the team title, followed by St. Michael and Walker. St. Amant placed 10th.

Dutchtown’s Shaquille Brown was the first local to cross the finish line in the boys ‘race with a time of 16:56 for 15th place. Catholic’s Philip Primeaux won in 15:19.

East Ascension placed fifth in overall boys standings. Catholic won the team title followed by Episcopal and St. Michael. Dutchtown placed ninth.

Dutchtown’s Emily Rezac finished in 21:07 for 23rd place, while St. Amant’s Kaitlin McClure and Randa Byars were 39th and 40th with times of 21:58 and 22:04.

Jenny Alberda of Dutchtown was 54th with a time of 22:43, while teammate Brandi Mallett was 62nd in 23:12. Dutchtown’s Courtney Ryan was also 72nd in 23:31 and Samantha Faulkner took 74th in 23:34.

East Ascension’s Dillon Truax placed 24th in 17:15, while teammate Justin?Guillory was 32nd in 17:35.

Daniel Espinoza of East Ascension also placed 39th with a time of 17:51, while Dutchtown’s Chris Thompson was 47th in 18:02 just ahead of East Ascension’s Wayne Picou at 48th crossing in 18:03.

East Ascension’s Blake Wingett  placed 60th in 18:22.

East Ascension’s Dillon?Truax comes down a hill at the metro cross country meet Tuesday afternoon. Truax placed 24th overall with a time of 17:15.
