Hazardous waste collection day set
Ascension Parish Hazardous Waste Collection Day will be April 18 at the Ascension Civic Center in Sorrento.
Collection will be 8 a.m.-noon at the center, which is located at 9608 Airline Hwy., Sorrento.
Only Ascension Parish residents will be permitted to drop off waste. Identification will be required.
Some of the allowed items that may be dropped off include: automobile tires (limit five), vehicle and golf cart batteries, cell phones and batteries, electronic equipment, fluorescent bulbs, gas, oil, antifreze, home and garden chemicals, ink and toner cartridges, latex and oil-based paints, thinners, varnishes, small quantities of scrap metal, propane tanks and televisions.
No commercial or business waste will be accepted.
Some of the items which will not be accpeted include: explosives, radioactive materials, medical waste, asbestos, school lab waste, paper, magazines, newspaper, cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic and glass, hurricane debris and wood waste.
The annual day is brought to residents by several sponsors: Keep Louisiana Beautiful, Keep Ascension Beautiful, Louisiana DEQ, Shell Chemical, Oil Mop, CACRC, Home Depot, Lowes, Office Depot, Wal-Mart, the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, Gonzales Fire Department, Sorrento Police, the Ascension Parish School Board, LeBlanc’s Payless Food Stores, Acadian Waste, DMC, EATEL, Ascension Parish Government and BASF.
