Home Rule Charter Commission cancels third straight meeting

The all-volunteer Home Rule Charter Commission failed for the third straight time to achieve a quorum  Monday night.

Six members showed up for the meeting, including new member Bill Dawson, who was appointed to the commission by Parish Councilman Kent Schexnaydre after the commission lacked a quorum at the Jan. 27 meeting.

Seven members are required for a quorum. The commission started with 12 members, but has operated for the most part with eight members after some  of the original members dropped out.

Visibly frustrated, chairman Milton Clouatre first called for a five-minute recess of the televised meeting, then reconvened the meeting and announced that the meeting was canceled.

The commission has until April 1 to complete its review of the charter and present suggested changes to the parish council.

Members have said the commission is poised to wrap up its work in within two meetings.

After Monday’s aborted meeting, members discussed when they would be able to schedule another meeting.
