LeJeune named chair of ‘March for Babies’

Dee LeJene has been named the chair for "March for Babies."

BATON ROUGE – Dee LeJeune will serve as chair for March for Babies, the March of Dimes largest annual fundraiser.

LeJeune, St. Elizabeth Hospital’s president and CEO, has committed to support March of Dimes research and community programs to help mothers have full-term pregnancies and babies to begin healthy lives, said March of Dimes Community Director Stacey Parker.

The Gonzales March for Babies event will take place April 18 at the American Legion.

The kickoff luncheon will be Jan. 14 at the Holiday Inn. New teams and businesses are invited to attend the kickoff, said Parker.

“We are honored to have Ms. Dee lead the way.” Parker said. “When our leaders publicly stand with a cause they support, they show the whole community the value of volunteer service and community involvement.”

“I’m serving as the 2009 Chair for March for Babies, because I believe our children’s health is a top priority –all babies should have the chance to be born healthy,” said LeJeune. “I’m asking every business and every family to join me by signing up at www.marchforbabies.org or calling 225-295-0655. After working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, I have seen the wonderful work of the March of Dimes through the years. I am happy to help continue its efforts by serving as Chair for the Ascension March for Babies.”

The most urgent infant health problem in the U.S. is premature birth, Parker said. It affects more than half a million babies each year, with the number growing every day. Babies born too soon are more likely to die or have disabilities.

The March of Dimes is committed to reducing the toll by funding research to find the answers to premature birth and providing comfort and information to families who are affected.

In the Ascension area, March for Babies is sponsored by Rubicon, BASF, EATEL, Williams Olefins, United Community Bank and Air Products.

In 2009 national March for Babies sponsors are Kmart, the March of Dimes’ top corporate supporter, CIGNA, Continental Airlines, Famous Footwear, Farmers Insurance Group, FedEx, First Response, Liberty Tax Services and Ther-Rx.

The March of Dimes is a nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health. With chapters nationwide and its premier event, March for Babies, the March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
