BATON ROUGE - East Ascension took the lead going into half-time on Kerry Weber’s jumper from the left wing at the buzzer and bolted out of the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run on way to a 52-39 non-district victory over Broadmoor Saturday evening at BHS’ gym.

“It was good win for us,” East Ascension head coach Kenny Almond said. “We don’t take much (time) off. I think Kenny Varnado’s defensive play got us going and I think Corey had his best game of the year. (The press) sparks everybody. Everybody has some input in it but Kenny’s hustle just kind of jump starts us.”

East Ascension (18-2) was coming off a 54-49 victory over St. Amant Tuesday night in the championship game of the Spartan Classic.

Gary Weber led all scorers with 15 points. Lane added 11 points to go with 11 rebounds, while Quinn Coco contributed 10 and Keith Fleming and Kenny Varnado each had five.

Broadmoor (4-8) was led by Derreo Herron with 13 points. Romeo Domino and Terrance Williamson each had seven and Colby Barnes provided six.

“They scored the last four points in the half and that was tough to overcome,” Broadmoor head coach Larry Grayson said. “We made some substitutions and we didn’t handle (their press) too well. We try to change defenses a lot. (Early) they scored twice against (a trapping zone” and we were leaving ourselves exposed underneath so we went back to man.”

Williamson’s lay-up off a steal put Broadmoor ahead 7-3 early after his dish to Herron for a 19-foot jumper. Domino’s cross court pass to Barnes gave the Bucs their biggest lead 14-7 after Fleming’s putback, Domino’s baseline jumper, Ferrell Strode’s dish to Coco inside and Herron’s drive.

Gary Weber’s lay up off a steal with two seconds remaining cut it to 14-11 going into the second quarter after Varnado fed him inside.

Fleming fed Gary Weber inside to open the second quarter before Barnes’ putback and Herron’s pull up jumper. Lane’s jumper and drive along opposite baselines cut it to 18-17 before Cullen Barnes’ jumper off pressure and Daricus Ventress lay up off a backcourt steal.

Lane’s lay up off an inbounds steal after Gary Weber fed Strode inside cut it to 22-21 before Domino spun inside but Coco’s free throws and Varnado’s dish to Kerry Weber put East Ascension ahead 25-24 at half-time.

Varnado’s baseline drive in transition preceded Anton Smith’s lay up off a steal  before Varnado’s dish to Lane in the right corner for a 3-pointer put East Ascension ahead 40-31 after Gary Weber’s putback and pull up in the lane. Williamson’s put back closed out the quarter.

Gary Weber’s reverse opened the final frame before he and Varnado fed Coco in transition and Lane fed him off a steal to give the Spartans their biggest elad 49-33 with 5:49 left to play.
