LIVINGSTON – A Gonzales man and former football standout at East Ascension High School died early Thursday morning in a single-vehicle crash along Hwy. 42, according to information from Louisiana State Police.

John P. Templet, 21, was killed when his 2000 Toyota 4-Runner went off the roadway at around 5 a.m. and overturned, Trooper Russell Graham said in a release.

Templet was heading eastbound on Hwy. 42, east of Hwy. 63, according to the police report. When he attempted to navigate a curve to the right in the road, the vehicle began to spin and overturned.

Templet, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries, Graham said.

Alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the crash, Graham said, but a blood sample was taken for chemical analysis.

A 2005 EAHS graduate and former linebacker on the Spartan football team, Templet initially enrolled at McNeese State University in?Lake Charles following high school. In 2006, he enrolled as a kinesiology student at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.
