BATON ROUGE -  The National Federation of Independent Business, Louisiana’s leading small business association, recently presented state Rep. M.J. “Mert” Smiley ?Jr. with a 2008 Guardian of Small Business award.

Smiley, R-Port Vincent, represents the 88th District, which includes portions of both Ascension and Livingston parishes.

The Guardian of Small Business award is the most prestigious honor that NFIB bestows on legislators in recognition of their efforts to support small business issues. NFIB/Louisana’s Leadership Council voted to honor Rep. Smiley for his work in this year’s legislative session. He earned a 100 percent NFIB voting record for supporting small businesses on key legislative issues.

“Small business is the heart and soul of Louisiana’s economy, and Mert Smiley understands that,” said Renee Baker, state director of NFIB/Louisiana. “He has stood by small business owners on issues ranging from improving access to affordable basic health insurance to fighting government encroachment into how small business owners run their companies.

“Small business owners are fortunate to have strong defenders such as Mert Smiley in the Legislature,” Baker said. “NFIB is pleased to recognize their efforts by presenting him with the Guardian of Small Business award.”
