Adult spellers compete for wordsmith laurels

Fifteen teams competed for the title of top spellers in the 2nd Annual Rotary Club of North Ascension Corporate Spelling Bee, held Nov. 5 in Gonzales.
Capturing first place was the team from New South Federal Bank, with members Leslie Lovett, Hannah Garatie and Sandy Roy.
Second place was taken by St. Elizabeth Hospital and team members Sue Knight, Leslie Norman and Cyndi Sarvis.
JRP Construction team members Pam Pebworth, Beth Cochran and Holden Coleman finished in third place.
Proceeds from the event go to benefit the Ascension Parish YMCA.
The contest was judged by Ascension Parish School Superintendent Donald Songy and Rick Davis of Price LeBlanc Nissan.
Mitzy Anthony, Rotary Club of North Ascension President-elect, announced the words used during the all-adult spelling bee.
The festive evening of spelling excitement and competition featured jambalaya served to contestants and spectators by North Ascension Rotarians Jill Wall and Lyndra Lea.
Sandy Roy, who was also on the champion special team, won the raffle drawing for an Acer laptop computer.
