West St. John overcomes ACHS’ quick start for District 9-1A title

EDGARD - Ascension Catholic jumped out to a 12-0 lead early in the first quarter before West St. John scored 39 unanswered points on way to a 39-18 District 9-1A championship clinching victory Friday night.

Ascension Catholic (4-5, 2-2) quarterback Scott Charleville kept into the end zone on a 3-yard sneak to open the scoring and then hit Matt Pearce for an 11-yard scoring strike on the Bulldogs next possession to give ACHS a 12-0 lead.

Dray Joseph then connected with Terrance Nathan for the first of three touchdown passes from 6 yards out to cut it to 12-6.

Kenneth Dabney’s 22-yard run knotted it up 12-12 before Tyler Lewis’ 4-yard run put the Rams ahead 20-12 following Joseph’s pass to Terrance Clark on the conversion.

Joseph hit Nathan for a 61-yard scoring strike just before half to give West St. John a 26-12 lead.

Nathan would haul in one more score from 42 yards on in the third quarter and Lewis’ 21-yard run into the end zone completed the Rams’ scoring.

James LeBeouf scored the final touchdown for Ascension Catholic on a 22-yard romp.

LeBeouf led the Bulldogs with 180 yards on 19 carries while Charleville was 7 of 15 passing for 76 yards.

Joseph completed 6 of 9 passes for 207 yards.

West St. John (5-3, 4-0) moves on the  the Class 1A playoffs as the 15th seed and will host 18th seeded Mangham Friday.

Ascension?Catholic fails to make the playoffs for the third consecutive year after dropping its final two contests to White Castle and West St. John each year.
