SALT crime provention expo returns Nov. 12

Staff reports

Preparations are underway for the annual Ascension Parish Seniors and Lawmen Together (SALT) Advisory Council Crime Prevention Expo, to be held Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. at the Gonzales Civic Center.

Informational booths will be available for participants to learn more about the services that are available to the older adult community. Elderly protected services, nursing home representatives and retired/senior volunteer programs are just some of the areas that will be represented at the event.

“It is our hope that through this Crime Prevention Expo we can increase awareness of the types of crimes older adults are most likely to face, and also increase their ability to prevent these crimes,” said Jo Roux, a spokesperson for the event. “The target audience is to all Ascension Parish residents 60 years and older.”

The SALT Council was formed in 1992 along with the AARP and the Chiefs of Police and has successfully continued under the administration of Sheriff Jeff Wiley. SALT meets once a month at the Parish Courthouse East in Gonzales to discuss issues concerning senior citizens.
