Sheets chosen as Christmas Parade grand marshal

Staff reports

The Ascension Chamber of Commerce recently announced St. Amant High School graduate and Major League Baseball pitcher Ben Sheets will serve as the Grand Marshal of  this year’s Ascension Christmas Parade.

Sheets has been on the roster for the Milwaukee Brewers since being drafted in the first round – 10th overall – in 1999. One of the highlights of Sheets' career was being chosen as the starting pitcher for the National League in the 2008 All-Star Game. This was the fourth year that Ben pitched in the All-Star Game and he was the first Milwaukee Brewer pitcher to start an All-Star Game.

Additional accomplishments during his baseball career include a recorded 20-strikeout performance in a Northeast Louisiana University (now the University of Louisiana at Monroe) game against Louisiana Tech, being named first team All-American in 1999 by Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America, 1999 Southland Conference Player of the Year and being a member of Team USA during the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, earning a Gold Medal. He and his wife Julie have two sons, Seaver and Miller. Sheets is also part owner of the American Hockey League's Milwaukee Admirals.

“We are very excited to have Ben as our Grand Marshall,” Sherrie Despino, President/CEO of the Ascension Chamber.  “It is always great to welcome back a local, home town Ascension Parish resident. We are very proud to have Ben accept our invitation to be the Grand Marshal and welcome Ben and his family as our honored guests for this parade.”

The 2008 Ascension Christmas Parade is scheduled to roll Sunday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. from East Worthey Road down South Burnside Avenue in Gonzales.
