FRENCH?SETTLEMENT?– A tip to Crime Stoppers led to the arrest Tuesday night of a man wanted in connection with two burglaries at a St. Amant store, according to   areport from APSO  Chief Criminal Deputy Tony Bacala.

Ascension officials apprehended Jeffrey Berthelot, 35, 17240 Hwy 16, French Settlement, was arrested as a fugitive of Ascension Parish, charged in connection with the September burglaries and booked into the Ascension Parish Jail  Oct. 15, Bacala said.

No bond had been set at press time.

Bacala said detectives received a number of Crime Stoppers tips that resulted in an arrest warrant being obtained for Berthelot. Berthelot was wanted for two counts of simple burglary of St. Amant Pharmacy and one count of looting in connection with the burglaries, Bacala said.

Anyone with information on Berthelot’s whereabouts was urged to contact the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office at 621-INFO (4636) or Crime Stoppers at 344-STOP (7867).

Sheriff Jeff Wiley initially asked for the public’s assistance earlier this month to solve the burglaries at St. Amant Pharmacy on Highway 431.

The first burglary occurred sometime between Sept. 2 and Sept. 3, which was just after Hurricane Gustav came through the area. There was no electricity due to the storm, and no video surveillance was available. During the burglary, blood was collected from the scene when it was discovered that the suspect sustained a cut during the commission of the crime.

The second burglary occurred between Sept. 18 and Sept. 19.

A large quantity of oxycodone was stolen during both burglaries.

During the second burglary,  video surveillance captured the unidentified suspect committing the burglary, Wiley said. It appeared from the video that the suspect wore dark colored pants and a dark colored long sleeve jacket with a hood and the number “1987” across the chest.
