Debris collection on state roads begins

Staff reports

Officials with the state’s Department of Transportation and Development said Wednesday that crews have begun to collect debris left by hurricanes Gustav and Ike along state-maintained highways in Ascension Parish.

Asplundh Tree Expert Co. will conduct the work, after contracting with DOTD.

Seven units will be used to haul debris away on the parish’s west bank, which took a stronger hit from Hurricane Gustav, while six vehicles will haul debris along highways on the east bank.

The first pass for debris pickup should be completed in the next two weeks, officials said.

Separate crews contracted by parish government are handling debris pickup along parish-maintained roads as well as in Gonzales and Sorrento. Donaldsonville hired its own contractor to remove debris within the city limits.

Donaldsonville contracted with a separate company to conduct debris removal within the city limits.
