‘12 Days of Christmas’ selected as them of 2008 Chamber parade

Staff reports

The Ascension Chamber of Commerce recently announced that “Twelve Days of Christmas” will be the theme of its 2008 Ascension Christmas Parade.

The event is set for Sunday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m.

“The Christmas parade is such a great avenue for local businesses, schools, and organizations to showcase their Christmas spirit,” said Sherrie Despino, President/CEO of the Ascension Chamber. “We are honored to again host the parade and look for even larger crowds to line the streets of Gonzales this year. Due to continued growth, we would like to especially recognize the support and involvement of the Gonzales Police Department, the City of Gonzales, and the Ascension Parish Sheriff's office. Our strong partnership with these entities allows the parade to grow while maintaining the safe, family feel that we strive for year after year.”

Anyone wishing to participate in the parade can pick up registration forms in mid-October. Register is encouraged before Nov. 20. There is a $50 late fee for sign up after Nov. 20 and no registrations will be accepted after Wednesday, Dec. 3.

Parade entries should be confined to marching groups (school affiliated bands, dance groups and cheerleading squads only), individual cars carrying dignitaries, and floats decorated within the limits of the theme. Vehicles, such as motorcycles, go-carts, mud trucks and low-riders are not allowed.

The parade route will roll east on West Worthey Road to South Burnside Avenue, then north to the Mall on Burnside Shopping Center, where the parade will dismantle.

The parade has certain guidelines to ensure the safety of both participants and spectators, as well as to eliminate confusion. No parking will be allowed on either side of East Worthey Road, and the corner of Hwy. 44 and Worthey will again be barricaded to allow vehicles a clear path of procession. Each float or marching group is required to have at least two adult marshals to walk along each side and assist with ensuring the safety of the spectators.

Line up begins at 10:30 a.m. and all float entries should be in place by noon for judging. Each entry is judged in four categories: Overall appearance, Use of Theme, Creativity/Originality and Effort.

As in the past, alcohol is strictly prohibited.

“We are looking forward to seeing all of our regular participants, as well as many of the new businesses in our Parish to participate in this great family event,” said office manager Chris Scott.  “Each year it is so nice to see the community come together and celebrate the season in such a fun, safe and enjoyable way. The Ascension Christmas Parade is always a memorable event for the Chamber of Commerce staff.”
