Staff reports

PRAIRIEVILLE - A Jefferson woman suspected of driving while impaired was killed Monday morning on Interstate 10 near the Hwy. 73 exit, according to Louisiana State Police.

The fatality is reported to be the first attributed to conditions from Hurricane Gustav.

Louisiana State Police spokesperson Sgt. Markus Smith said that the crash occurred in the eastbound lanes of I-10 near milepost 170 at about 8:40 a.m. In the incident, a 57-year old woman was driving her 2008 Kia Spectra when she apparently lost control of the vehicle amid high winds and rain.

The woman, who was not identified pending notification of next of kin, was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash, Smith said. He added that a blood sample from the victim was sent to the State Police Crime Lab for further tests.
