Voluntary evacuation order issued in low-lying Ascension

Parish President Tommy Martinez issued a voluntary evacuation order Saturday afternoon for Ascension Parish in advance of possible impact from Hurricane Gustav.

Martinez made the announcement in coordination the Ascension Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness has issued a voluntary evacuation order for all low lying

areas in Ascension Parish. Parish spokesperson Ami Johnson said the order comes because of a risk of flooding on the parish's east bank.

The order specifically targets the following areas

• East of Highway 431 to the Diversion Canal, and

• North of Highway 42 to Bayou Manchac

The information has been confirmed with the National Weather Service.

State operated shelters are open north of the I-10/ I-12 corridor, Johnson said.

Residents wishing to seek shelter at one of these facilities can call 211 from their phone or stop at any rest area along evacuation routes for state shelter locations and information.
