Louisiana Regional Airport to host Gonzales Aviation Celebration Saturday

Staff reports

A group of local pilots have organized the Gonzales Aviation Celebration in conjunction with National Aviation Week at Louisiana Regional Airport.

The event will take place Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the airport, located on Loosemore Road south of Gonzales, and is free to the publc

The goal of the event is to increase public awareness about aviation in general and Louisiana Regional Airport specifically.

“With EATEL on board as our sponsor, we are able to bring in aerobatic pilot Chuck Vincent to perform as the highlight of the celebration,” a spokesperson with the airport said in a release. “He is scheduled to appear on the horizon at 12:30 p.m., depending on weather.”

The celebration will include a “Fly-in,” which is an open house style event for aviation enthusiasts. Some will fly in from all directions and some will drive out for the family-oriented event. There will also be a precision landing competition open to all fixed-wing aviators landing between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The prize, for the pilot of a clean landing nearest the aim point, is a custom-made granite trophy crafted by Ascension Granite and Marble.

Several of local certified flight instructors will be offering orientation flights at a special rate on a first-come, first-serve basis between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

During the celebration, representatives will be on hand from more than six aviation organizations eager to talk with those interested in  both recreational and professional opportunities in aviation.

“A number of our local pilots will have their aircraft on static display, allowing visitors an up close and personal tour of some of aviation’s most interesting aircraft including vintage WWII aircraft and state-of-the-art aircraft,” the spokesperson said.

Jambalaya and hotdogs will be served between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., compliments of the Jambalaya Festival Association, Aviation Specialists, Inc., Baton Rouge Coca Cola and Kentwood Water.
