007s wrap up summer play with U.S. Open National Championship

BEAUMONT, Texas – The 007s, a 16u select team coached by St. Amant head coach Scott Nielson, recently won the U.S. Open National Tournament.

“When we set out, our original goal is to teach the kids the most about softball and let them develop,” Nielson said. “We were very successful no doubt.”

Nielson also said the team which holds tryouts in the fall for four different age brackets gives players an opportunity for exposure to college recruiters.

Competing in the 18u division, the 007s finished with a 10-1 record after falling into the losers bracket by winning seven staight games, six in a single day, to claim the championship.

The team was comprised of players from for St. Amant, Ascension Catholic, University Lab, Live Oak, Destrehan, Pine Prairie and Ponchatoula.

Overall, the 007s compiled a 43-7-1 record this summer playing in tournaments in Oklahoma, Mississippi, Colorado and Texas.

After winning two tournaments in Louisiana the 007s participated in the Oklahoma Classic held in conjunction with the College World Series in Oklahoma City.

The 007s won their pool in the round robin format and attended the final game of the College World Series that saw Arizona State defeat Texas A&M for the title.

The 007s went on to participate in the Colorado Classic, winning their pool in a round robin format defeating teams from Colorado, Illinois and Texas scoring 38 runs while only allowing 6.

The Colorado Sparkler, one of the largest fast pitch tournaments in the nation featuring over 400 teams was next for the 007s.

The 007s won their pool defeating teams from Colorado, New Mexico and Oklahoma to advance to the elite bracket with the winners of the other 32 pools.

The team won their first two games before dropping their next two but placed ninth out of over 160 16u teams.

The 007s are comprised of Allison Falcon and Alayna Falcon of Ascension Catholic; Emily Douglas, Aime Parent, Kelli Luquette, Melanie Parker and Gabby Templet of St. Amant; Danyelle Alello from Live Oak; Emily Marcantel from Pine Prairie; MyKiesha Young from University Lab; Jessica Stonestreet from Destrehan and Tiffany Grimes from Ponchatoula.

Allison Falcon hit six home runs over a five-day period in Denver and Alayna Falcon split time in the circle with Alello and Parent.
