The Nutcracker

Anger Control Training

Ascension Parish is sponsoring an Anger Control Training course for teens, ages 13 - 17. The course is 10 weeks at $10 per week on Tuesdays 4-5 p.m. It begins Tuesday, January 8. Participants will learn triggers of their anger, anger reducers, thinking ahead, self-evaluation, angry behavior cycle, social skills, and the anger control chain. The program has been in use for over 30 years in schools, community agencies, juvenile institutions, and other settings. It teaches participants what not to do, helping them respond to anger in a nonaggressive manner and rethink anger-provoking situations. The course is taught by suzanne hamilton, licensed professional counselor and lawrence legard, licensed masters social worker. Community Conversations

Trinity AME Church, located in Gonzales, La., hosts a monthly event called “Community Conversations.” The purpose of these events is to convene community stakeholders and the community members from all walks of life, and allow them to engage with distinguished speakers to challenge their collective thinking, promote tolerance, and create social change. We look forward to gathering on Tuesday, December 18 6-8 p.m. to discuss Fire Safety during the Holiday season. Speakers include representatives from the Louisiana Capital-West Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Gonzales Fire Department. Harvest Time Food Bank

Bikes for Tykes

Annual Retired Marines & Ascension Sheriff's Bikes for Tykes campaign is underway. The goal is to provide at least 150 needy children in Ascension Parish with a bike for Christmas. River Center Ice Skating

A fun filled holiday event for all ages, Ice Skating on the River sponsored by Cirque du Soleil CRYSTAL will have 90 minute sessions nearly every day from December 21, 2018 until December 31, 2018. Singing Christmas Tree

First Baptist Lafayette will present THE SINGING CHRISTMAS TREE December 14 – 17. The four performances will be at the church at 1100 Lee Avenue in downtown Lafayette. CASA Training

Child Advocacy Services’ CASA Program will be hosting a volunteer training in January 2019. We are beginning to advertise for this training now in hopes to have a full class. Currently there are approximately 30 children in foster care waiting to be assigned a CASA volunteer so they can have a neutral adult looking out for their best interest.
