Ascension Parish Library wraps up Summer Reading Program
Listen to your favorite music from movies, and play along on a variety of instruments. Complete Musical Mayhem may break out, but everyone’s sure to have a blast and lots of laughs at our end of the summer party on Tuesday, July 24 at 6:30 p.m. in Dutchtown and on Friday, July 27 at 10:30 a.m. in Donaldsonville. Musical Mayhem is designed for preschool aged children, but is open to everyone.
This summer, some of our activities are planned specifically for children in lower elementary grades. If you are going into K – 2nd grade next year, join us for Under the Sea on Thursday, July 26 at 3:30 p.m. in Gonzales. Celebrate The Little Mermaid with fun activities like a dolphin ring toss, mermaid limbo, and more. Then, in Campfire Fun & Games on Thursday, July 26 at 6:30 p.m. in Dutchtown, sing around a campfire, identify animal tracks, make crafts, and play nature-related games – all inside the library.
If you’re going into grades 2-5 next year, we have something fun for you too! If you like to create, you won’t want to miss Striped Trees on Monday, July 23 at 6:30 p.m. in Gonzales. Use strips of different colored tissue paper and a tree-looking twig to create your own striped tree. Then on Tuesday, July 24 at 10:30 a.m. in Gonzales and on Thursday, July 26 at 6:30 p.m. in Galvez, join us for Rock, Paper, Scissors. Come listen to a hilarious story, then play in our rock, paper, scissors tournament.
It’s not too late to sign up for the Libraries Rock summer reading program when you stop in to participate in any of these events or online at myapl.beanstack.org. Children from birth through eighth grade are eligible to join our reading program. Studies show that children who read at least ten minutes per day during the summer are more likely to retain and improve the reading skills learned during the recent school year. Parish children who join the reading program can track their reading by minutes read to earn prizes. Any child who is registered for the reading program can complete it by reading 250 minutes during the months of May, June, and July. All children who complete the reading program will receive a 2018 Libraries Rock book bag, and a certificate. Children who read 500 minutes or more earn a free meal pass courtesy of Chipotle, a free bowling pass courtesy of Premier Lanes, and a free Kids Summer Film Fest movie pass courtesy of Malco Theatres.

Teen Programs at Ascension Parish Library
This year’s Teen Summer Reading program, Libraries Rock, is coming to a close. Help us wrap up the summer at a Glam Rock Party on Tuesday, July 24 at 6:30 p.m. in Galvez and on Friday, July 27 at 4:00 p.m. in Gonzales. Aqua Net and spandex make a comeback this year at our Teen End of Summer Glam Rock Party. Come dressed as your favorite ROCK ICON, show off your moves, learn glam rock makeup tips, and more. We’re partying like rock stars. . . glam rock stars!

Teens entering sixth grade through twelfth grade are eligible to join our reading program. Any teen who is registered for the reading program can complete it by earning points and badge by attending any teen program or logging minutes read during the months of May, June, and July. All teens who complete the reading program will receive a free Libraries Rock messenger bag, a bowling pass courtesy of Premier Lanes and will be able to spin our prize wheel for an additional prize. Keep earning points and badges all summer to be eligible for our end of the summer drawing - An Amazon Fire Tablet.
