Celebrate summer as Ascension Parish Library presents our “Libraries Rock!” summer reading program. Children and young adults can earn prizes for reading, and enjoy great performers and programs at the library. Adults too can join in the fun during our Booklover’s Summer reading program. Registration for all summer reading programs -- children, teen, and adults -- begins on Thursday, May 24. Register at any library location or online at

Have you heard about summer slide? Summer slide is the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. Combatting this educational loss doesn’t have to be boring! We offer a well-established summer reading program that encourages kids, teens, and adults to read over the summer. Educational, fun enrichment activities throughout the summer are an important feature of our program.

Libraries are multi-faceted – many things to many people. They are a resource providing assistance, knowledge, entertainment, and a sense of community. Here at APL, we still provide traditional services, but continue to change in dynamic ways by offering a wide array of resources (free computers and access to the internet, research databases, career and employment resources, books and e-books, audiobooks, movies, music, and genealogy).

Libraries -- places of self-help and lifelong learning -- are a resource for people of any age to find what they need to help improve their quality of life by bringing people and information together.

All locations of APL, Donaldsonville, Gonzales, Galvez, and Dutchtown offer a wide range of educational workshops for all ages. Gardening with the Master Gardeners, health resources/classes with St Elizabeth Hospital, workshops and counseling for small business with SCORE and LSBDC, and cultural programs in partnership with the Gonzales Committee on Cultural Affairs are just a sampling of the wide variety of programming at APL.

Add to that literacy programs such as author visits, book clubs for teens and adults, the RELIC lecture series, and storytime’s for babies, toddlers, and preschool children and you can see that we are not only about what we have for people, but what we do for and with people.

Online resources for all ages, anything from encyclopedias to comics, are available both in house and from your home computer with your library card. Monthly computer workshops rotate from morning to evening hours to accommodate anyone’s schedule.

We offer all this and more at your local Ascension Parish library. And it’s all FREE! Come in for a visit. Get your card. It’s the smartest card you’ll ever own. Use your library.

Libraries = Education. Libraries are a smart investment. Libraries transform lives.
