LaFASA Annual Denim Day

The Louisiana Foundation Against Sexual Assault (LaFASA) held the first Annual Denim Day event on Wednesday, April 25 at the Guru on Government Street in Baton Rouge. The purpose for holding the event was to raise the awareness of a general societal response towards victims of rape and sexual assault, which too often is to first blame the victim for why an assault occurred. Denim Day was originally triggered by a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Since 1999, one Wednesday each April is now internationally recognized as Denim Day.Sexual assault is never the fault of the victim.
