The Ascension Parish Council on Aging through The Gonzales Senior Center with great help and assistance from St Elizabeth Physicians and RiteAid Drugstore in Gonzales is determined to educate local senior citizens about SHINGLES, a horribly painful, possibly life changing disease of older people that can now be mostly eliminated using a relatively new inoculation injection. The shot is FREE or costs very little for most people on Medicare, Tricare and Medicaid so EVERYONE needs to be informed ASAP!

On Aug. 14, from 11 a.m.-noon, friends and family are invited to the Gonzales Senior Center, 526 S Irma Ave, Gonzales, for the "Ask the Doctor" series. Dr. Andrew R. Gustavson, MD Neurologist, will speak on Shingles.

The event is FREE to the public. Call ahead to reserve a noon meal for a $1.10 donation. Patrons are welcome to come early to pick a seat and to check out all the senior activities from yoga to pool to LSU extension classes available to Ascension Parish residents 60+ years old. Ascension Parish Council on Aging provides Medicare and Social Security counseling and is the home of the parish "Meals on Wheels" program. They also provide transport to doctors for seniors and support for caregivers as well as utility assistance for senior citizens in need. Call 225-621-5750 for a reservation.

Shingles starts out as the chicken pox you had as a child. The virus doesn't die when the chicken pox goes away, it hides in your nerve cells until you are older or until your immune system is low and then it attacks with a vengeance. Some people get a painful rash that goes away eventually but others get the rashes accompanied by horrible nerve pain that never ceases and they must live the rest of their lives on narcotics

Dr. Andrew R. Gustavson, MD Neurologist and St Elizabeth Physician is a wonderful speaker with worldwide experience, an Ask the Doctor favorite. He will explain everything you need and want to know about Shingles in layman's language and he will take questions from the audience.

Rite Aid's Gonzales staff of pharmacists and technicians will distribute literature regarding SHINGLES so that you may learn even more on your own. If you can provide the name of your insurance carrier, RiteAid will be able to tell you exactly how much a SHINGLES shot would cost you, if anything. Many people get it for free and there is no prescription from your doctor required .
