Books and Brushes

Create a masterpiece of your own with Books and Brushes: Painting at the Library! We’ll walk you through step-by-step to paint a picture you can enjoy for years to come.  We provide the brushes, paints and canvas, and all you’ll need to bring along is an apron.  You have two opportunities to enjoy this fun craft: First, the Gonzales branch will paint a beautiful Louisiana fleur-de-lis on Wednesday, June 20. Then, the Donaldsonville branch will paint an exciting New Orleans French Quarter scene on Tuesday, June 26.  Both programs begin at 6 p.m.. Space is limited, so please call Gonzales at 647-3955 or Donaldsonville at 473-8052 to register today!

Teen Programs 

Do you ever find yourself looking around at your stuff and thinking that you need more glitter, more glitz, more glam in your life? Well, good news:  Ascension Parish Library is here to help you Glam Your Gear. Untangle your ear buds with unique and easy ear bud holders and add sparkle to your keys with glitter. Glam Your Gear is scheduled in Donaldsonville for Monday, June 25, and in Dutchtown for Wednesday, June 27. All Glam Your Gear programs begin at 4:00 p.m.  And donít forget to bring a key or two that needs some glam!

Do our library programs seem too girly to you? Are you a guy looking for a program thatís more macho? Then this is the program for you! Join us for an afternoon of crazy, manly fun as we make duct tape wallets, challenge each other for bragging rights on the best paper airplanes and much more! Guy Stuff is scheduled in Galvez for Tuesday, June 26, and in Gonzales for Thursday, June 28.  All Guy Stuff programs begin at 4 p.m.

Calling talented teensóitís time for another great round of entertainment at the public library. Bring your talent and 10 minutes of material, or two songs, to perform in front of a crowd. On Tuesday, June 26, in Dutchtown, from 6:30 to 7:30, come listen and play in a supportive setting and have fun all at once. No registration is required, but time is limited. Refreshments are provided.

Sign up for the ìOwn The Nightî summer reading program when you stop in to participate in any teen event.  Teens from sixth grade through age 18 are eligible to join our reading program.  Any teen who is registered for the reading program can complete it by submitting three book reviews or attending three teen programs during the months of June and July.  All teens who complete the reading program will receive a gray Own the Night t-shirt.

Free Small Business Consulting

Ascension Parish Library offers free small business consulting on the second Monday of each month at the library in Galvez, 40300 Hwy. 42, Prairieville.  Persons wanting to start or improve a small business receive a private, two-hour consultation designed to provide professional help in areas of business planning, financing, marketing, and accounting.

This service is provided by the Louisiana Small Business Development Center at Southern University ñ Baton Rouge and is funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).  All services are free and confidential.  To schedule an appointment call the Louisiana Small Business Development Center at 225-922-0998.   

SCORE offers free counseling

Ascension Parish Library and SCORE/Baton Rouge offer free, on-site counseling in Ascension Parish for new business start-ups and mentoring for existing businesses.  Counseling sessions are held at two library locations each month by appointment: the first Tuesday morning and third Tuesday afternoon at the library in Gonzales and the second Wednesday morning and third Wednesday afternoon at the library in Dutchtown.

SCORE - Counselors to America’s Small Business, a nonprofit Association and a resource partner of the Small Business Administration, is dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide.

Counselors are active or retired business owners and executives with extensive experience, who follow the steps on “How to Start and Manage a Successful Business.”  This includes help on the Business Plan, Financial Forecast, Marketing ad Sales, Legal and Accounting suggestions, Business Insurance needs, and the Bank Loan Package preparation.  SCORE counselors follow a strict code of ethics and confidentiality.

This year SCORE will begin expanding its education opportunities in the community for small businesses with a new QuickSTART Program and a stronger Community Alliance Program. These New Programs will help SCORE become even more valuable resource in our community.
