Annual Fallen Officer Memorial Ceremony held in Ascension Parish
On May 16, 1962 President John F. Kennedy visited with police officers to make the first annual National Police Week proclamation.
On Friday, May 24, Ascension hosted it's Annual Fallen Officer Memorial Ceremony at the Gonzales Training Center at 10 a.m. in light of the same Police Week.
"Today, we gather on this ground to honor our local officers who have laid down their lives," Ascension Parish Sheriff Bobby Webre said. "They knew the danger, yet would proudly pin on their badges. We are humbled by their sacrifices, and we are honored by their courage."
Fallen Officers who were honored are as follows:
--Cpl. Shane Michael Totty, from Baton Rouge Police Department. Totty passed away after a motorcycle crash while escorting a funeral on Hwy 190. His end of watch was February 1, 2019.
--Asst. Chief Kirt Roy Ricks, from Montgomery Police Department (Grant Parish). Ricks passed away after he was killed in a vehicle accident on Hwy 71. His end of watch was Setptember 7, 2018.
--Agent Cadet Immanuel James Washington, from Wildlife and Fisheries, suffered fatal heart dysrhythmia during a morning physical training at Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. His end of watch was July 19, 2018.
--Officer Jason Michael Seals, from Slidell Police Department, succumbed to his injuries after a motorcycle crash escorting a funeral procession on September 25, 2018.
One rose was handed to fellow officers attending the ceremony, honoring their past service.
