The impact of cancer and the devastation it brings to its victims and their families is all too familiar. The Ascension Parish Assessor’s Office, like many other offices and families throughout the parish, have witnessed family members, friends and coworkers fight this battle up close and personal. So this October during “Breast Cancer Awareness month,” the Assessor’s Office decided to fight back.

The Assessor’s Office employees decided to raise money for the Gonzales Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. With the blessing of Assessor Smiley, whose wife is fighting her own valiant battle, the office set a goal of one thousand dollars to contribute towards helping the Gonzales facility. The employees initiated several in-house fundraisers to help achieve their goal such as “pay to wear pink” shirt days and a walk-a-thon where participants pledged one dollar for every 5000 steps taken throughout October. The mission was accomplished and last week Assessor Smiley presented a check for one thousand dollars to Tiffany Shelton, Director of Radiation at Mary Bird Perkins, Gonzales.

As the Ascension Parish Assessor I am so proud that the employees of our office took it upon themselves to raise this money for such a good cause as the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Gonzales. My employees know that my wife is battling cancer and is using the services of Mary Bird Perkins in Gonzales for her radiation treatments. I would like to thank all of them for their donations and friendship,” said Assessor Smiley.
