Some areas in Ascension are challenged with having easy access to a library.

Ascension Parish Library in Galvez has taken initiative to combat that challenge. On Saturday, November 10, they unveiled their new Mobile Book Library.

"We don't have specific routes yet, but we will go to the same areas that we went before," Angelle Deshautelles, Library Director, said. "Visitors will check out a book from inside of the vehicle, then a few weeks later it will come back and they will return the books."

Their goal is to reach new facilities. For example, day cares and assisted living facilities.

"We have already been to Francois Bend, actually, so we are already taking action," Deshautelles said. "There is something for everybody, from romance and horror to children books."

There really is something for everyone in the newly expanded Galvez library, too. Originally built at 10,000 square foot, it is now 22,000 square foot. The expansion has made it possible for them to improve all areas of the library.

"We expanded partly due to the growing parish," Deshautelles said. "Our community has more needs now."

With the expansion, there is now an activity room for children's programs, a young adult area, a magazine reading room, three new study rooms, and an expanded technology area with new computers.

"Another way to gain access to the library is via the Hoopla app," Deshautelles said. "It has library books and music on it. All you need is your library card to gain access."

Since 1960, their mission has always been to enrich, educate, inform, and entertain their library patrons. The library is proud to offer these new services with their mission in mind.

The Big Reveal event had a photo booth area, face painting, Clifford the Big Red Dog, free jambalaya, and family-friendly games.
