2nd Annual Ezra Open Golf Tournament
Often times people aren't able to interact with the band that plays at events. However, Better Than Ezra not only participates but interacts with the guests.
In 2007, the Better Than Ezra Foundation was officially formed. It has been around since before Hurricane Katrina, but they weren't as heavily involved as they were afterwards. They're on their 30th year as a band, too, which started in Baton Rouge in 1988.
Their Open Golf Tournament was held at Pelican Point Golf Club in Gonzales on October 12 for the second year in a row. The Foundation's plan is to branch out into the Baton Rouge area and expand their services over here.
Serving underprivileged children is their main purpose. At Bethune Elementary in New Orleans, they have spent about $85,000 dollars a year to provide services related to the arts in their after school programs.
"After school programs include tutoring, art classes, or video production, amongst other things. This helps to keep the kids off the streets while their parents may still have to work," Holly Popham, a Commercial Lender for the Bank of America and a member of the Board of Directors for the Foundation, said.
"We require about 30 to 60 minutes of tutoring, then about an hour's worth of another activity. The after school program usually lasts from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m.," Tom Drummond, Better Than Ezra bassist and President of the Foundation, said.
They've had other fundraisers through things like tailgates, bowling tournaments, or at places like Tipitina's in New Orleans, to name a few. They enjoy changing up their fundraiser events and keeping them fresh.
Every year, they're able to raise about $1.9 million dollars that goes towards funding the after school activities, as well as providing improvements to the schools and helping the staff.
"I think what we do is a big responsibility, because early education is so important. We want to be able to give these kids a future, while also making our fundraisers a fun time," Drummond said.
Once the tournament ended, the golfers and guests gathered under the pavilion next to the Club House for an awards banquet, live music from Better Than Ezra, tasty libations, and freshly prepared food.
2018 marks the 25th anniversary of Better Than Ezra's Deluxe album release. Their song, "Good," is number 35 on Billboard's Greatest of All Time Alternative Songs list.
