First Baptist Church of Gonzales is celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of their senior pastor, Dr. James B. Law. Pastor Law began his ministry among this 500-member congregation in September 1993 at the age of 28 while in the process of finishing his doctoral studies at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

Dr. Law and his wife Gwynne, both native Floridians, have planted their lives in Ascension Parish and are the parents of six children ranging from ages twenty-six to ten.

With twenty-five years of pastoral service, Law has registered the longest tenure of any pastor in the 111-year history of the church. In reflecting on his call to ministry, Law stated, “I can remember walking the seminary campus with Gwynne and praying for God’s direction for our ministry. Our prayer was that God would lead us to a congregation where we could invest our lives with a people. We believe our time in Gonzales has been an answer to that prayer.”

His ministry has been marked by a commitment to Scripture, “From day one, I have attempted to model a thoroughly biblical ministry - one which has at its forefront Gospel proclamation, biblical teaching, and healthy church life.”

Under Dr. Law’s leadership, FBCG has made a ministry impact around the world. “My passion is to see Christ glorified in this local Body of believers here in Ascension Parish with a ripple effect to the ends of the earth, and I believe we are seeing that happen.”

In addition to his ministry in Ascension Parish, Dr. Law oversees a theological initiative which brings accredited theological education to pastors and church workers in areas of the world that have little to no access to it. At present, there are over 1,200 students enrolled in the program with over 600 graduates since 2011. He presently oversees twenty-five locations throughout East Asia from his Gonzales office.

Dr. Law has led the congregation of FBCG through seasons of joy and heartbreak. “In these years we have celebrated God’s goodness on so many fronts, from the birth of babies, to weddings, anniversaries, baptisms and changed lives. We are a multi-generational church that exists to point others to the grace of God found in Christ Jesus. To see the Lord bring transformation in someone’s life is one of the great joys of the pastorate for me.”

Under Pastor Law’s leadership, FBCG has sought to be a faithful church in Ascension Parish through hands-on ministry to the needs of the community. They have opened their doors in the face of disaster and tragedy. Law expressed, “We want to be a ‘can-do’ church with regard to meeting needs which stems from our love for Christ.”

One of the first sermons Dr. Law preached as pastor of FBCG was from I Corinthians 13 on the subject of God’s love. “I have sought to model and express the love of Christ in my pastoral ministry, and I have challenged our congregation to be instruments of Christ’s love in this world. I believe that if we don’t get that right, we won’t get much else right.”

FBCG will celebrate his anniversary with worship and fellowship on September 16. The church is praying for many more years of effective ministry together.
